Cuts threat - Mayor asks Secretary of State for transfer of London ...

Ahead of the meeting today of the Association of London Government executive committee meeting, Ken Livingstone has written to Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to ask for the transfer of voluntary grants funding to the Mayor's Office in order to protect London-wide grants now under threat from cuts.

The Executive committee meeting is expected to approve massive funding cuts for voluntary groups across London.

The Mayor's letter to Ruth Kelly suggested opening ‘discussions with you regarding the transfer of the grants scheme back to city-wide London government, to the office of the Mayor of London.'

Since members of the Association of London Government Grants Committee first proposed cutting funding for voluntary groups by up to 33 per cent, the Mayor has spoken in defence of the hundreds of organisations across London who provide services for some of the most vulnerable and needy in the community.

Groups share in £20k grants aid

CHILDREN and isolated parents will be the main beneficiaries of windfall Government grants worth more than £20,000 to community groups in the Harlow and Epping area.

Four organisations have secured money from the Local Network Fund, which supports voluntary and community groups developing projects for children and young people who may otherwise have limited access to services.

Homestart Harlow, in The Hides, will spend its £5,150 on its families group which works to get more people socialising to address problems of parenting and isolation.

Senior organiser Ina Quig said the team was thrilled: "We mainly work with people in their homes but this is for those who feel isolated and want social interaction but find parent and children groups don't work for them.

Bush signs law allowing taxpayers to view where federal money is ...

Today, President Bush signed the Federal Funding Accountability And Transparency Act Of 2006 to improve the quality and accessibility of information about federal spending.

The legislation calls on the Office of Management and Budget to oversee a new website through which the public can readily access information about grants and contracts provided by Federal government agencies, except for those classified for national security reasons and government grants and contracts under $25,000.

The Act is part of recent government efforts to improve transparency, accountability, and management across the federal government.

According to the US Senate draft legislation, most Federal expenditures fall within several broad categories, and yet most are largely unseen by the public.
